BOOK REVIEW

It starts in an isolated house by the sea. There are unexplained deaths, ancient beliefs, mysterious books of power, strange noises, tales of darkness. It has all the creepy, hair-raising elements you might expect of the latest release from the revived Hammer horror publishing imprint. Except that the author is Lynne Truss, most famous for her warmly funny grammar best-seller Eats, Shoots and Leaves.

Her master of ceremonies for this creep-fest? Roger the talking cat. Her hero? A retired librarian. It’s wonderful and funny and a delight from beginning to end. CH
